In April 1936 Eisler visited Spain for the first time in order to attend the 14th Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music, held that year in Barcelona. In the Catalan capital, he learned about the celebration, in July that year, of an international ‘People’s Olympiad’, conceived as an anti-fascist protest against the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics. He decided to collaborate by composing a representative song for the event.
