Where Does Mathematical Modeling Begin? A Personal Remark
In the course of her recent doctoral dissertation at Teachers College, Columbia, Germain- Williams (2014) had the occasion to compare several published versions of the mathematical modeling cycle. Most of them begin the sequence which makes up the modeling cycle with a specific problem or question for which a mathematical model is to be found. Then the problem/ situation is to be idealized and the idealized form used to develop mathematical insights and results.
