Analysis of Rock Mass Wedge Stability

Abstract

It may often be the case in slopes, foundations and openings in jointed rock that rock mass wedges are formed by a free surface, such as a slope face or the wall of an opening, and one or more discontinuities. Certain loadings may cause a rock mass wedge to experience translational or rotational movements, dislodging it from the bedrock and endangering the stability of the engineering structure in question. Consideration of the ultimate state of equilibrium based on rigid-body mechanics is often undertaken in such cases for the stability analysis. Some graphical and computational methods toward this end, in which bulk forces such as dead weight, forces from seepage water, etc. are treated in the form of point loads, have been described in technical literature.
