Shear Tests on Discontinuities

  • Walter Wittke

Abstract

The shear strength of discontinuities is often of great importance with respect to the stability of engineering structures in rock and the required support. The effort necessary to support a rock slope, for instance, may vary considerably as a result of only small differences in the angle of friction on a discontinuity. Determining the shear strength of discontinuities therefore represents an important task of rock mechanics.
