Some fundamental considerations regarding the stability of rock slopes will be presented in the following with the aid of the method of analysis explained in Chapter 6 applied to a slope of average height. The rock mass is assumed to be not only isotropic, but also transversely isotropic in the elastic range. Additionally, both the influence of horizontal stresses and, in the viscoplastic analyses, of discontinuities on stability are investigated (Section 15.2).
