Nondestructive Evaluation of Polymer Compounds by Solid State NMR Imaging
Polymer products are often heterogeneus systems in which one or more properties vary with space. Examples include injection molded materials, where molecular order is introduced by the material flow, materials exposed to temperature gradients or mechanical force fields, where molecular mobility or order vary with space, aged polymers, where the chemical composition changes beginning at the surface, polymer blends and composites exhibiting phase separation, and, of course, composite materials. If controlled, the heterogeneous nature can be exploited for production of parts with tailored material properties. Therefore, methods to study such properties are in need.
