Theory of Intercorrelation Between Dipolar and Quadrupolar Fluctuations:Application to 2H NMR in Clays

Abstract

2H NMR of D2O adsorbed on clay platelets shows a differential broadening of the residual doublet. This effect is due to an intercorrelation between quadrupolar (2H) and dipolar (Fe3+) fluctuations. A theoretical treatment using the fictitious spin-1/2 formalism describes this phenomenon.
