EPR and Optical Studies of Dysprosium in Lanthanide Nicotinate Dihydrates

Abstract

The Kramers ion Dy3+ has been shown to exhibit similar properties to Er3+ and the non-Kramers ions Tm3+ and Tb3+ in the lanthanide nicotinate dihydrates (LnND):
  1. (1)

    an almost Ising-like g-matrix, corresponding to a ground state with large amplitude of Mj = ± J,

     
  2. (2)

    purely magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between nearest neighbours,

     
  3. (3)

    great sensitivity of the g-matrix to the nature of the nearest neighbour ion.
