Anomalous Field Dependence of the Second Moment in Bi Observed by µSR

Abstract

The Gaussian relaxation rate, a, was measured in a single crystalline Bi sphere at 11K in transverse external magnetic fields ranging from 0.249 T to 0.747 T by means of the stroboscope µSR method. With a conventional spectrometer a was determined in zero field and in transverse fields up to 1 T. The angle 6 between the c-axis of the hexagonal Bi lattice and the external field (or the initial muon polarisation in the case of zero field) was varied between 0° and 180°.
