NMR Study of a Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal with Polarization Sign Reversal

Abstract

The temperature dependence of 13C chemical shifts has been measured in the isotropic, smectic A and smectic C phases of the ferroelectric liquid crystal IS-2424 which exibits a polarization sign reversal. The results show that the tilt angle is not proportional to the polarization and allow for a microscopic determination of the polar and bipolar biasing of the main ferroelectric dipole.
