Molecular Orientation Time of Liquid Crystals in Low Magnetic Field

Abstract

The dependence of molecular orientation on shear stresses and magnetic field, in liquid crystals, is studied with NMR “spinning” experiments. The pure compound MBBA shows narrowing of the structured proton resonance with increased spin speed and yields a molecular reorientation time of about 10 seconds at room temperature. Sample spinning of commercial liquid crystal mixtures show similar resonance narrowing and these results are used to deduce the effect of viscosity and magnetic field on molecular reorientation times.
