Structure and Dynamics of Discotic Liquid Crystal Polymers

Abstract

Monomers, model dimers and polycondensates of discotic liquid crystals based on heptyloxy substituted triphenylenes were investigated by solid state 2H-NMR. Macroscopic alignment in the magnetic field prove their liquid crystallinity. The alignment process and its kinetics is monitored via the 2H—NMR line shapes. The monomers possess free rotation around the column axes in the mesophase whereas this process is frozen in the dimers and polymers due to the interlinkage of the columns through the connection of the mesogens via the flexible spacer.
