Multiplanar Transformation in Computed Tomography

Abstract

At the outset, computed tomography’s transverse section imaging characteristic was regarded as a valuable additional asset to its ability to image soft tissues. However, it was soon realized that greater flexibility was needed, and that other scanning planes would be desirable or even vital for certain anatomical evaluations. Anatomical features lying in or near the transverse plane of the scan cannot be imaged well by transverse sections. In the cranium, such features include the orbital roof, planum sphenoidale, sella, suprasellar cisterns, the superior portions of the lateral and third ventricles, the superior portion of the corpus callosum, and the tentorium. In addition, it is now apparent that study of orbital soft tissues and facial structures is greatly aided by alternative planes of presentation, particularly coronal.
