Monte Carlo Simulation of Photometrical Measurements in Fog

Abstract

Fog is a major accident-causing factor, and for this reason the network of Laboratoires des Ponts et Chaussées has undertaken research on the visibility of highway equipment and vehicles under foggy conditions. This research uses two tools, one based on experimentation and the other on simulation using the Monte Carlo method. A description is first given of the model as well as the experimental environment and the test phases. The difficulties, and hence the limits, of this procedure are described. Results obtained by simulation are then compared with measurements: first, the lighting obtained in certain particular directions and then the veiling luminance created by a vehicle’s headlights. These initial comparisons provide satisfactory results.
