Corrosion Caused by Cavitation in a Diffuser
To explain the rapid material corrosion which accompanies cavitatirig flow, tests have been made at Göttingen using the rectangular diffuser shown in fig 1. Metal test pieces are inserted in the hatched portion of the wall and the bubble impact is controlled to attack the test piece steadily. This control is by pressure observation. The pressure variation through the converging nozzle and diffuser is also shown in fig 1. Similar pressure distributions are shown in fig 2. Tests were made upon bronze, cast iron, zinc and bakelite C samples. The bakelite C was adopted because of its being an artificial resin almost chemically insoluble and having good insulation properties. Tests on this material admitted of rapid pure mechanical attack without chemical or electrolytic complication. It withstands compression and impact better than glass and is of uniform physical and chemical structure.
