In Chapter 2, we discussed the various factors and processes that are conducive to the initiation, development, and growth of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in marine and coastal waters. The lifetime of HAB events is typically some weeks, but can be shorter or longer being a function of the concurrence of required favorable conditions, including light and nutrient availability, other biogeochemical ocean state variables, and the algae genus and species involved.
