Prediction of the driving conditions for hypersonic liquid fuel jets

Abstract

Pulsed liquid jets with high supersonic velocities need studying for potential applications. These jets are created by projectile impact on the nozzle sac liquid. In this project, water and diesel fuel jets have been obtained with velocities to 2400 m/s at ambient conditions. A one-dimensional analysis has been developed and calibrated by experiments allowing the driving condition can be estimated for higher velocities. For jets of 3000 and 4000 m/s respectively, nozzle sac pressures are 16.5 and 34 GPa while projectile velocities are 2300 and 3300 m/s. Nozzle problems and liquid properties at these conditions indicate that they are difficult to achieve.
