Improvement of aerospike nozzle efficiency due to change of plug base configuration

The abstract Recently, plug nozzle (aerospike nozzle) begins to attract attention for development of single stage to orbit vehicle and so on. For example, it has been developed to X-33 or other reusable launch vehicle. However, aerospike nozzle still has many problems. In past times, we studied on boat-tail drag problem. The study showed that boat-tail drag could be reduced due to modification of its configuration(ISSW22, 4870).

Now, we challenge to improve efficiency of the nozzle due to changing plug base configuration. Mainly, the change is the addition of some prominence(we call this prominence “nail”). So, the flow fields around various plug base configurations have been numerically simulated at several pressure ratio in order to observe the effect of the plug base configuration on the total thrust.
