Abstract

Free to Be Dog Haven is a small sanctuary for dogs who—as articulated in our mission statement—“face challenges sharing their lives with humans.” Based outside Philadelphia, the sanctuary works with local animal shelters and rescue groups to accommodate dogs who are deemed unadoptable for behavioral reasons, the so-called “problem dogs.” The sanctuary provides a home and quality of life for these dogs, acknowledging, as much as possible, who they are as individuals and allowing them to live their lives on their own terms.
