In this section, we recall basic techniques which, on top of the formal preliminaries of the previous one, provide the formal and scientific groundwork for the dissertation. We start by recalling preferential models and preferential entailment as underlying formalism of the qualitative and semi-quantitative inferences used in Section 3.1. Based on this, we recall the approach of conditional structures (Section 3.2) as purely qualitative approach for reasoning on the base of a knowledge base with the qualitative information provided in the knowledge base, only. This is followed by the semi-quantitative ordinal conditional functions (Section 3.3); we close this section by briefly recalling probabilistic reasoning in Section 3.4.
