The input medium of a handsketch-based diagram editor is a sequence of point coordinates captured by the used input device. A low-level recognizer transforms such point coordinates into graphical symbols. We begin this chapter with the problem analysis, consider several related pattern recognition problems, and state why these existing methods are not appropriate for solving our problem. Then we present our fundamental concepts and design decisions which lead to an object-oriented system design. We describe the system components and algorithms in detail and conclude the chapter with a summary of our method.
