The ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL)

  • Martin P. Clark

Abstract

The ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL) is perhaps the most important functional part of ATM, since it provides for the conversion of information into a format suitable for carriage across an ATM network. In this chapter we discuss the various types of AAL (e.g. AAL1, AAL2, AAL3/4, AAL5) which have so far been defined, describing the function of each and when it should be used. Later in the chapter we describe also the various service specific convergence sublayer (SSCS) functions which provide for mapping of different types of services and communication protocols (e.g. frame relay, SMDS) into a format suitable for carriage by an ATM network.
