The ATM Transport Network (the ATM and Physical Layers)

  • Martin P. Clark

The combination of ATM Layer and Physical Layer is an ATM transport network. This is a highly flexible and powerful type of telecommunications network based on a statistical multiplexing technique known as cell switching. This chapter consolidates the various aspects of the ATM and physical layers about which we learned in earlier chapters to give a complete picture of an ATM transport network. We discuss first the structure of the ATM layer, the types of connections and network elements, the setting-up of connections and the maintenance of acceptable connection quality during transmission. We then go on to discuss the range of physical interfaces and media over which ATM cells may be transported.
