Operation and Maintenance (OAM) of ATM Networks

  • Martin P. Clark

The quality of service offered by a telecommunications network depends to a great extent upon the reliability of individual components, but most important is the design of the network as a whole. Since very few networks are subjected to constant and predictable traffic loads, one of the most challenging tasks of managing modern telecommunications networks is the monitoring and maintenance of the network. In this chapter we review ITU’s concepts of ‘quality of service (QOS)’, ‘network performance (NP)’, performance monitoring and the parameters defined for measuring them. We then go on to describe the functions offered for the monitoring, fault localization and maintenance of ATM networks.
