Communication with patients is often considered inherent to the professionalism of the doctor and consequent to the character and personality of the surgeon. Communicating requires a review of one’s verbal and nonverbal style and of one’s way of being. Unlike therapists, surgeons are not required to study their clinical style and to refine their weaker sides. Clinical practice, teamwork, and patient feedback teach us to have a modicum of humility regarding our expertise.
