Peripheral and Central Mechanisms of Visceral Pain Modulation

Visceral pain is a negatively perceived sensation conveyed by organ systems due to stretch, inflammation, ischemia, and other mechanisms of organ damage. This experience can be modulated by central acting mechanisms which can inhibit ascending pain signals, or by peripherally acting mechanisms such as local peptide release. Understanding the mechanisms of visceral pain and its modulation are vital in the creation and application of therapies which reduce the response to painful stimuli. This chapter covers several of these well-studied processes and their role in the perception of pain.
