Essentials of Scenario Building
Effective simulation scenarios begin with the identification of an appropriate clinical topic. Drivers for subject matter include new evidence, changing regulations, advancing technology, and revised documentation requirements. The topic should be timely and suited to the intended learner. An appropriate setting must be chosen, and role descriptions for all participants must be clear. The course creators determine the principal outcome of the scenario, and then specific learning objectives can be developed. Learning objectives are action-oriented. They create the basis for a facilitator’s checklist. A well-built scenario has three components: beginning (setting the scene), middle (problems need to be solved), and end (debrief and reflection).
