Coda: DeVos and the Future of Neoliberal Education Reform and Resistance in Chicago

Abstract

This chapter serves as a coda to the book. It explores the relationship between the national education agenda under Secretary DeVos and neoliberal education reform in Chicago. The Chicago reform movement is attempting to distance itself from the national agenda through the leveraging of difference between the two agendas. However, using Adorno’s metaphysics, the chapter argues that both reform movements have a familial relationship, thus putting into focus the ‘tragedy and farce’ of neoliberal education reform. The farce of reform represents a clear breaking point in the discursive battleground upon which new forms of resistance can focus. By targeting the Chicago’s reform movements claims of difference, a new and inclusive vision of education policy and democracy in action can be constructed.
