Hepatic or liver abscess is most commonly amoebic in etiology worldwide and pyogenic in Western nations. Patients most commonly present with fever, chills, and right upper quadrant pain. The etiology of pyogenic abscesses is most commonly from a biliary tract source or another gastrointestinal (GI) tract infection with portal seeding of bacteria to the liver. Treatment includes systemic antibiotics and drainage (usually percutaneous) and sometimes requires operative intervention.
