Measured Influences of Magnetic Storms on the Heart

Abstract

In this chapter we continue our investigations, described in Chaps.  5,  6, and  7, into the influences of cosmic weather dynamics (Chap.  4) on the brain and heart. In Sect. 8.1, we note that we were unable to discern visually distinct influences of geomagnetic storms on heart function, using the primary electrocardiographic (ECG), respiratory rhythm, and cardiac R-R interval data we recorded, mostly because of the large variations in these cardiac characteristics between healthy young volunteers. In our electroencephalographic (EEG) investigations, we also observed large interindividual variations in the measured data. Although our analysis of forehead–occipital theta rhythm coherence function allowed us to distinguish geomagnetic storm–influenced EEG recordings from background recordings, no such distinction was possible in our analysis of ECG investigations. We therefore analyzed measurements of the dynamics of known cardiac parameters (which are listed at the end of Sect. 8.1), and this analysis demonstrated a distinct influence of geomagnetic storms on these cardiac parameters (see Sect. 8.2).
