Due to the chronic and relapsing nature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), patients often present for emergency care with a wide variety of complaints. A high index of suspicion is needed to differentiate a typical flare from an emergent complication which can quickly lead to a life-threatening illness with significant morbidity and mortality. Imaging, surgical consultation, and consultation with other subspecialties are often essential as adjuncts to the optimal care of this patient population.
