There are currently no scoring systems for the diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI); rather diagnosis is made through assessment of history, exam, laboratory adjuncts, and diagnostic imaging. There are also no validated scoring systems for the prognosis of AMI – though multiple factors have been proposed as impacting mortality in patients with AMI, notably elevated lactate, delay in diagnosis >24 h from onset of symptoms, and indicators of systemic illness (sepsis, SOFA, shock index). Pre-existing comorbidities such as atrial fibrillation also may portend increased mortality. Further research is required to build a prognostic model for patients with AMI.
