“Les metamorphoses”: Civil Rights, Ethnic Revival, and New Regional Sounds

Abstract

In a region bathed in its mythology of itself—Evangeline Parish having been named for the ill-fated romantic heroine of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem—race and genre were also the stuff of myth-making. As the sounds of urban African-American culture drew the younger generation of Creole musicians away from traditional music and Creole accordionists began to imitate, and to identify with, the highly amplified Texas zydeco sound they heard on records and on the radio, the music culture of Southwest Louisiana fractured along generational as well as racial lines. Younger Cajun musicians, drawn to rock much the same way those of an earlier generation had incorporated country and western instrumentation and styles into their sound, had less interest in old-time music traditions.
