Getting in, Dropping out, and Staying on: Determinants of Girls’ School Attendance in Nepal

Abstract

Factors affecting girls’ school attendance in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal are identified. Through the 1980s, caste, poverty, cultural prejudice, rural residence, and gender prevented many girls from attending school. Most school-going girls were pulled out at menarche for domestic work or to be married. Throughout Nepal, today, however, girls from all backgrounds are enrolling in primary school. Withdrawal for work and early marriage remains normative in low castes and along the Indian border, but many Hill parents, hoping for daughters’ financial support in old age, encourage them to stay in school. The more educated her mother is, the more likely a girl is to attend college, find employment, marry in her twenties, and continue being employed.
