Endovascular Treatment of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis: A Literature Review

Abstract

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare but life threatening pathophysiological process. Currently, the first-line treatment for the CVST is anticoagulation with intravenous unfractionated heparin or subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH). However, for some critical CVST patients, especially when the thrombi are refractory to the regular anticoagulation with heparin or LMWH, many studies have confirmed the safety and efficacy of endovascular treatment. It includes the methods of local chemical thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy and stenting. This review would focus on the three types of techniques of endovascular treatment and its latest developments.
