“Contact” in Our Work

Chapter

Abstract

Jodie Foster’s portrayal of Carl Sagan’s Contact astronaut and the apparently illogical but essential spaciousness of her capsule are the allegorical focus of this chapter. I underscore the importance of allowing pedagogical and supervisory and psychotherapeutic theory to accompany rather than dictate our practice, viewing through this window the landscape of a psychotherapeutic experience in which I was tethered unhelpfully to rules rather than principles.
