Exploration: Dopamine and the Hard Work of Learning Science

Abstract

Introductory science courses are often large-enrolment, lecture-based courses emphasizing the memorization of facts. Integrating purposeful play into our classrooms can inspire students to move beyond rote learning and help them discover the beauty of science and scientific inquiry. In this chapter, we describe the role of play in science, the importance of play in science pedagogy and ways we use play in our teaching to create engaging learning environments. We’ll share play examples that engage students within and beyond the course, as well as highlight others designed to help students gain a deeper, more authentic, understanding of scientific processes.
