Memoirs of a Survivor

Chapter

Abstract

As EMI entered the 1980s, its reputation was damaged and the new Conservative government started to reduce the various financial incentives that the British industry had enjoyed until then. This chapter shows how EMI adapted during this period to produce a series of smaller-scale dramas that were some of the most interesting and challenging films the company made, all under the leadership of Verity Lambert. Her final release, the John Cleese vehicle Clockwise, marked the end of EMI’s filmmaking exploits, and the chapter concludes with a discussion of the events which led to the company's sale to Cannon in 1986.
