IROKO Theatre and the African Theatre-in-Education Scene in London
My chapter will explore the African Theatre-in-Education scene in London with reference to the work of IROKO Theatre and its recent productions. In my submission, I will highlight the significance of African theatre in schools and the community, looking at how it is helping to raise awareness and change ingrained negative perceptions about Africa, especially amongst young people. My chapter will further examine the use of storytelling in an educational context, and highlight how the institutions are relying on using the techniques of African theatre as a vehicle with which to engage with their hard-to-reach audiences. In doing so, I will focus in particular on projects like ‘Our Shared Heritage’, ‘Simple Acts of Kindness’, ‘IROKO Family Edutainment’, ‘Forgotten Folks’, and ‘The Magic of Rhythms’.
