Nigerian Political Satire at the Soho Theatre: Class, Culture, and Theatrical Languages in Oladipo Agboluaje’s The Estate and Iyale (The First Wife)
The first decade of the twenty-first century heralded a range of new British-African playwrights including Bola Agbaje, Oladipo Agboluaje, Levi David Addai, Inua Ellams, Janice Okoh, and Ade Solanke. While most of these playwrights focused on the experiences of British-Africans in contemporary urban London, Agboluaje turned his focus to Nigeria in two plays produced by Tiata Fahodzi at the Soho Theatre: The Estate (2006) and Iya-Ile (The First Wife) (2009). This chapter will first situate Agboluaje within this trend and the work of Tiata Fahodzi before moving on to explore how his plays discuss contemporary Nigeria through representational tropes of satirical African political playwriting. The strategic incorporation of Yoruba on the British stage and the effectiveness of the use of satire will also be examined.
