Abstract

The introductory chapter opens with a description of the various attempts made over the years to transfer Caravaggio’s paintings to exhibitions connected to the work of NGOs or having as their theme the “European migrant crisis.” The principles underpinning the originality of the book are clearly elucidated. On the one hand, it provides a critical reflection on the physical displacement of the artist’s work and its utilization for moral and political purposes in relation to the visual field of humanitarian action; on the other, based on Caravaggio’s aesthetic innovations, it offers the opportunity to produce new forms of montage that are anachronistic and thought-provoking with the intention of guiding the observer through the most haunting and compelling images of our time.
