MedLang MOOC–An Innovative Palliative Care Learning Tool. Innovative Approaches and Teaching Methodologies

Abstract

The study addresses a contemporary challenge: teaching/learning languages in the context of an ageing and mobile Europe, where palliative care, a needed professional domain - only begins to take root. To meet the demands of everyday and specialised language structures, language teaching/learning increasingly uses advanced methodologies for knowledge transfer, one of them - the MOOC, being a new learning alternative in Romania. The study emphasises mobile environments as learning opportunities, where personal comfort and fulfilment depend on language competence in the new context. The palliative care outputs have been converted into medical language learning units in English, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Romanian, and French. Field research findings come from questionnaires and students’ comments on the forum while taking the Palliative Care MOOC language course. Student strategies are explored for insights into increased motivation by linking MOOC tasks and activities to three psychological states: experienced meaningfulness, experienced responsibility for work outcomes, and knowledge of results.
