In the context of the global rise of China, this chapter explores the dilemma of China’s soft power expansion—a limited success involving winning over and influencing its audiences—through online and offline television series as a powerful soft power platform in the media realm. This chapter reveals that the paradox of China’s soft power generation is not due to its lack of strategies at the state level, but rather because of soft power pathways that rely upon production in one source country, and circulation (import, export) and reception in a receiving country. This chapter offers a glimpse into China’s soft power strategy and pathways, methodology, and research settings.
