Acquiring resources before the opposition has an opportunity, particularly when those resources are very rare or play some crucial role, is a fantastic way to prevent them from functioning properly on the battlefield. Even if such resources cannot be kept out of the hands of the opposition entirely, acquiring supplies early and in large enough quantities that the price for what remains is comparatively higher forces the opposition to consume more capital than necessary, putting them at a strategic disadvantage.
