Toward a Communist Democracy
Whereas Marx experienced an intellectual journey from democracy to communism, Marxism has experienced a journey from communism to democracy. Marx began his intellectual project with the aim of contributing to the formation of the true democratic state. He became a communist when he realized that a democratic state, which depends on the private form of ownership, protects the existing inequality and bondage. For Rancière, the fact that equality and freedom were associated with the communist narrative does not mean that they cannot be experienced in the name of democracy. Equality and freedom can be associated with democracy if we stop thinking of it as a mask covering the reality of domination but consider it as a process of creating different common spaces to act freely.
