Abstract

Of all the characters who emerge from classical Greek literature, Circe has been the most infamous and enduring. She is also the most ancient. The Odyssey gives her a personality and a story; while Hesiod’s Theogony provides her with relatives, siblings and explains that she is the daughter of the divinity Helios and the Oceanid Perseis.
