Work and Job Satisfaction

Abstract

Jones elaborates on the key role of “work” in the model, reflecting on its close connection to social capital even in areas as innocuous as the school reunion. The relationship of work to personal feeling (“job satisfaction”) is here elaborated: Americans have worked more hours in each decade in every age group, regardless of gender and for both black and white Americans. The gender gap and the black-white differential in hours have both lessened significantly. While there is no marked difference in job satisfaction between men and women, white Americans exhibit higher levels of job satisfaction than black Americans. College graduates, who work the most hours, also have the highest level of job satisfaction.
