Competency-Based Medical Education: A Brief Overview

Abstract

Innovation in residency education has led to a transition from a classical apprenticeship model of training to a competency-based model. Competency-based curricula are developed based on various educational guidelines and a set of core abilities deemed essential for practice within a specific subspecialty. The main driving force behind this transition is the desire for a standardized learning experience with frequent, transparent evaluations. A modular layout is used for the curriculum with multimodal assessments for each module. The first module is a unique opportunity to create a transitional program, a boot camp, for new trainees. This chapter gives a brief overview of these concepts.
