Esophageal tumors include a spectrum of benign and malignant disease which have been an integral part of a general thoracic surgeon practice. Esophageal cancer has grown in the last decade, and its management mandates a multidisciplinary approach from endoscopists, radiologists, oncologists, and surgeons. Benign esophageal tumors are often found incidentally, and their terminology depends on the layer that they originate from. Several surgical techniques apply to management of esophageal tumors which requires particular experience and often coordination with other surgical specialties. Minimally invasive approaches are also well documented but less applied to everyday practice.
