When to Ask for Help

Abstract

If the thought of asking for help with a difficult case in the office or operating room ever crosses you mind, you should definitely reach out to a colleague or mentor for assistance. You should speak with your new partners before starting to make sure they will be available to help you if needed, and you should feel comfortable calling them. It will take about 4–5 years as an attending surgeon to be confident with most of the procedures that you perform. You should never be too afraid, proud, or arrogant to call for help.
